"As a newcomer to genealogy research, I quickly found that I needed an organized approach to the layers of data, stories, and information I was able to collect. Soon, I was overwhelmed with data, stories, and records from all four grandparents. Janine’s message of "Let Go of Perfect" was the most important for me! I'm 74 years old and my goal is to hand over a family history to my progeny. The Orderly Roots guides offer straightforward advice and are all about staying on track, keeping things simple, and making your system work for you!”

If you've tried to get your genealogy organized, but it's still a jumbled mess, you are NOT alone. I often hear from people who feel this way and want to do something about it:

They Keep Trying Different Things

They've tried doing it on their own or followed an over-complicated system, but they struggled to get a handle on things.

They Want to Share

They wanted to pass their genealogy work on to their children or other family members, but they felt like they couldn't share it until it was orderly and clear.

They're Overwhelmed

They were overwhlemed by a huge backlog of information and didn't know what to do with it.

“I love genealogy but I get overwhelmed sometimes. These guides have helped me simplify and cut down on the number of steps in my process.  All of the Orderly Roots Guides have been so useful.  I like that as a professional organizer, Janine teaches that there is no one way to organize research.  One method that works for her might not work for you.  Her philosophy of “good enough” has been so helpful.

She isn’t advocating “sloppy” research but rather that doing something your way is better than doing nothing.

My favorite part of the Orderly Roots Guides is the guidance Janine gives you to follow.  She gives you options and emphasizes that her way is not the ONLY way.

I think these are invaluable to anyone beginning their genealogy journey and also to anyone who has been researching for many years.  We can all learn new methods as we go and search for our ancestors.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be good at organizing to do this?

No, you don’t need any magic organizing skills before diving into getting your genealogy organized.  I’ve worked with many people over the years who didn’t even know where to begin and they now have a system in place to keep track of everything.  In fact, a simple approach is best so it’s often better to begin without any fancy organizational ideas.

Are these guides right for me?

If you’re serious about your genealogy, but it’s a hobby, not a profession, then these guides are definitely for you!  I teach a ‘good enough source citation’ approach that will help you keep accurate and trustworthy records but that doesn’t require the detail of professional citations.

Is your approach easy?

My philosophy with most things in life is ‘Let It Be Easy.’  I prefer simple systems that are easy for anyone to follow, but that means I also believe everyone needs to follow their own style.  My guides walk you through how I do my research, but I invite you to take my system and make it your own.  Either way, simple and easy is the best approach to maintaining consistent habits.

Do I have to be paperless to use your guides?

Definitely not!  I’m an advocate of paperless genealogy, but I began my own journey using paper and know many genealogists who prefer this approach. The important thing is to choose one or the other when it comes to keeping track of your research.  Much of the information in my guides will help people with either paper or paperless systems, though the focus is on paperless and I don't provide any specific information on paper filing systems.

Can I find this information on your blog?

You can’t find all of the information, but you can find a lot of it. The problem, however, is I’ve been blogging about genealogy for more than ten years so there’s a lot of information to sift through! Instead, you can have it all in one place and applied in a step-by-step manner.  I like to relate it to the very foundation of these guides -- you can continue digging through an oversized wealth of information, or you can use a simple system that has been boiled down into a useful process.

Meet Janine

I'm Janine Adams, a professional organizer and a genealogy enthusiast. I love doing family history research, but it was very easy for me to get overwhelmed and not know where to turn next. I've developed some systems to help me focus and know just where to start, but even as someone who lives and breathes organizing, I still have to work hard to stay organized as I grow my family tree.  As the Organize Your Family History blog grew, I realized that people could benefit from a clear guide on how I organize my own genealogy information. I began creating The Orderly Roots Guides to share my combined knowledge of organizing and genealogy. I hope that by sharing what I’ve learned along the way, you’ll be able to save time and energy  getting your own genealogy organized.
