September 30 x 30 wrap up

September 30, 2022 By Janine Adams 3 Comments

For me, September has been an exceedingly long month. I wish I could say it was a productive month for me in terms of genealogy, but as I mentioned in my mid-month check-in, that hasn’t turned out to be the case.

I am itching to do genealogy research, but this month the combination of grief-induced brain fog and the number of tasks I need to do as executor of my father’s estate has not allowed me to prioritize it. I am so grateful to the commenters who suggested I cut myself slack. I took your advice and I’m not beating myself up over my inability to do research this month.

October seems overly optimistic for me to do 30 minutes of genealogy research a day, so I will hold off until November for another 30 x 30 challenge.

How about you? If you participated in the September 30 x 30 challenge, please let us know in the comments how it went for you!

September 30 x 30 check-in

September 15, 2022 By Janine Adams 10 Comments

It’s the middle of the September 30 x 30 challenge and it’s time to check in. How’s your month going?

When I first proposed doing a challenge this month, I thought it would help me feel connected to my father, who died on August 20. One of my wise commenters, Marian, suggested that I go easy on myself this month. I so appreciated that because, as it’s turned out, my days are far from normal and doing research, while enjoyable, hasn’t been easy. My brother is visiting from Australia, my mind isn’t as sharp as usual, and I have myriad estate-related tasks on my plate. So in fact, I’ve researched only a handful of days.

I hope your month is going better! If you’re participating in the challenge of researching or organizing for 30 minutes a day each day this month, please let us know in the comments how it’s going!

June 30 x 30 wrap-up

July 1, 2022 By Janine Adams 2 Comments

Now that the June 30 x 30 challenge is in the rear view mirror, it’s time to report in. How did it go? Were you able to research or organize every day this month? And did you get in 15 hours?

I’ve definitely had better months. I saw the handwriting on the wall mid-month and relaxed my goal to a total of four hours for the last two weeks. I did manage to achieve that, I believe. I tried hard to do a little something every day, and I probably did some research ten out of the last 14 days. I did have a couple of long sessions, so I got in those four hours.

My current project is processing the documents I found in my father’s and aunt’s homes. I did the initial sort when the boxes arrived, so all I have to do now is go to the file containing the ten items I’d selected to act on and pick one or more to enter into my Reunion database. I think I’ve emptied and refilled the action file three times now, so I’ve plowed through at least 30 documents.

Having the challenge definitely helped me get more done than I otherwise would have in a crazy busy month. I’m glad I did it! I’m hopeful that I’ll be able to devote more time to research during the next 30 x 30 challenge, which will be in August or September. And I do plan to try to get some research done in July as well.

If you participated in this challenge (or even if you didn’t), please let us know in the comments how your research month was!

30 x 30 check-in time!

March 15, 2022 By Janine Adams 4 Comments

It’s the middle of the month. How’s your 30 x 30 challenge going? Please let us know in the comments!

I have to admit, I’m not having a great month for genealogy research. It’s disappointing, because I really do want to take in a bunch of RootsTech classes and I also want to prep for the 1950 census release in just a couple of weeks. But sometimes life gets in the way of enjoyable activities.

My 92-year-old aunt is having some health difficulties and I’m her Power of Attorney so I’ve been kept very busy arranging for and monitoring her care from afar. I’m glad to do it but after taking care of my aunt and my business I don’t have a lot of extra time.

I’m so glad I didn’t procrastinate too much on my census prep. I’ve been able to identify some enumeration districts for some of my people, in case the name indexes don’t give me what I need. I’ve managed to research or watch RootsTech classes only 10 of the last 15 days. Disappointing, but unavoidable. I’m just going to do what I can and not beat myself up.

I hope some of you have had a better go of it and that if you haven’t your being kind to yourself about it! I hope to take in at least a few classes before the end of the month.

about me

I'm Janine Adams, a professional organizer and a genealogy enthusiast. I love doing family history research, but I find it's very easy for me to get overwhelmed and not know where to turn next. So I'm working hard to stay organized and feel in control as I grow my family tree.

In this blog, I share my discoveries and explorations, along with my organizing challenges (and solutions). I hope by sharing what I learn along the way I'll be able to help you stay focused and have fun while you do your research, too.
