I just registered for the August research trip to the Allen County Public Library, in Ft. Wayne, Indiana sponsored by the National Genealogical Society. After a couple weeks of contemplation, this morning I pulled the trigger on investing $750 on this opportunity to further my research. (I blogged a couple of weeks ago about how tempted I was.)
I’m really excited and I know I’m going to enjoy planning this. I definitely want to make the most out of the opportunity to research at this renowned library. I’m particularly thrilled about getting the help of professional genealogists who are part of the trip.
I would love any advice any of you have for me. What should I do in advance? What should I bring along? It seems to me that having a clear idea of my research goals is paramount; I’m already thinking about that.
Please share any advice you might have in the comments.
Thanks in advance!

Janine, I spent a month last summer in the Allen County area while working on in-depth family research. At the library, you are allowed to bring a printer and scanner and make your own copies. There is an area with alcoves in front of the librarians’ desks which works well for this activity. The research librarians are a fantastic resource for helping you delve into specific areas. They truly know this library and how to obtain information. It is also possible to have a private consultation and the one I had was quite informative. This repository is completely user friendly. Have a glorious time and thank you so much for your very informative blog!

Be sure to check out their online catalog, including their catalog of microfilm. Also, if you have access to FindMyPast, look for articles you want in PERSI. The Genealogy Center is the one who created PERSI, so they have all of the periodicals there. Wear comfy shoes; dress in layers. You won’t need coins for copies; they use a copy card system. It’s best to have small bills (nothing larger than a $5) to put on the card, as you won’t get a refund for any money left on the card. Take a security lock for your laptop. Yes, genealogists are honest, but it is a public building and open to all.
Explore their website at genealogycenter.org, as they have orientation videos and other guides to get you started.
Have a great time!!
