January 30 x 30 wrap up

February 1, 2022 By Janine Adams 6 Comments

Another 30 x 30 challenge is behind us. Did it help you get more genealogy research or genealogy organizing done? Please share in the comments!

I had a good month. I missed two days but did research the other 28 days. On four of those days, my research consisted of attending Amy Johnson Crow’s All About Ancestry webinars, which were 90 minutes to two hours long, so that helped with my daily average. Over the course of the month, I averaged 44 minutes a day for a total of 22 hours of research. That feels great!

One of my goals was to eliminate my backlog of downloaded documents I needed to process. On January 1, I had 77 documents in the backlog. During the month, I downloaded 23 new documents and processed a total of 90 documents, leaving me with a backlog of 10 documents still to process. Hooray! I had a lot of fun and learned a lot about my ancestors.

If you participated in the challenge, please leave a comment. Did the challenge help you get more done than you otherwise would have? Are you pleased with your progress?

I’ll probably do another challenge in March, so keep an eye out!

I fell down a bit when I got sick, but my main goal was to sort my DNA matches and see if I can eliminate enough to help with a missing ancestor mystery. I managed to get most of my decent matches sorted into my paternal maternal line, so am in a good position to go from here on which matches I need to look at and keep working through them. To get me back on track after my unsuccessful January I am doing my own challenge in February to do a minimum of 15 minutes a day and then build on that. As this month is Family Tree’s Scottish Family History Month I am going to concentrate on researching my Paternal Grandfather’s family which emigrated from Scotland to NZ in the 1850’s or so. Hopefully I will be able to track them back a bit further, and find the elusive marriage certificate/record for my Gt Gt Grandparents….

I had a great month! I started off having my 90-year old mother pick 4 ancestors she wanted me to research in depth for her. I did the research but was unsure how to present all I found because she doesn’t use a computer so I set up files on my computer, put PDF’s in them and printed out what she wanted to see and mailed a packet to her. The computer files I saved for my daughters who don’t want my binders and paper files. I have been trying to figure out how to organize my work for a couple of years to hand off to my girls. This made me really sit down and figure out exactly what I wanted to do. I set up Timelines for every person which were a great help to see where I was missing facts and where things didn’t add up. I feel really successful in finally putting “IT” all together. Four new ancestors for this month! Thanks for doing this challenge!

I had a horrible month. I only got the equivalent of two days of research done.

That’s a bummer, Rebecca. Please be kind to yourself! I hope you join us on the expected March 30 x 30 challenge!

about me

I'm Janine Adams, a professional organizer and a genealogy enthusiast. I love doing family history research, but I find it's very easy for me to get overwhelmed and not know where to turn next. So I'm working hard to stay organized and feel in control as I grow my family tree.

In this blog, I share my discoveries and explorations, along with my organizing challenges (and solutions). I hope by sharing what I learn along the way I'll be able to help you stay focused and have fun while you do your research, too.
