It’s the end of another 30 x 30 challenge and it’s time to share how you did. I’m sorry to say that I did not have a good month. As I mentioned in the mid-month check in, I had trouble remembering in the first half of the month. Things got worse in the second half because I was in Walla Walla visiting my family from October 18 to 28. I had some nice reminiscing time with my father and my aunt, but mostly I was kept so busy with various tasks for them (and my brother) that I did virtually no research. I was able to process a few documents from my backlog on the airplane, but overall, the last half of the month feels like a wash.
But you know what? I’m cutting myself a lot of slack. I was not able to prioritize genealogy research and that’s okay. I know better months are in my future!
If you participated in the challenge, please let us know in the comments how it went. I’m hopeful it went well for you, but there’s no shame in admitting you didn’t have a great month.
I plan to do another challenge in December or in January, depending on how my December looks.
Jerry Hereford says
Overall I had a good month. I finally was able to mail a flash drive to my wife’s nephew with a family history data and various documents. Also, as previously stated I was able to upload an updated family tree to Ancestry.com. In the last week I got a little bogged down with downloading newspaper articles on a shooting incident my grgrandfather was involved in 1897 Wyoming. I found a total of 27 articles. Some articles were long and some were short. I am in the process of transcribing the articles. It is a little tedious, but by transcribing I learn more about the shooting. Not sure yet how I will input the data into my genealogy program (Legacy Family Tree). I have contacted the National Archives in Denver to get any Federal Court Records (the shooting happened on an Indian Reservation). If I may add, if anyone is doing research in Wyoming, they have a wonderful Wyoming newspaper digital collection under Wyoming Digital Newspaper Collection. You do have to register, but it is free. Thanks for having this challenge. The half hour per day keeps me focused.

I’m always amazed by your productivity, Jerry! Sounds like a great month. And thanks for passing on the tip about Wyoming newspaper research.
Marty says
I got very little done. By the time I got home from work. I was toast. Being a veterinarian right now leaves little energy for anything else in life.
Janine Adams says
I’ve read that it’s a very difficult time for veterinarians, Marty. Please take care of yourself. Your genealogy will be there for you when you’re ready to work on it.
Gwen Jackson says
Janine, thanks for the 30 x 30 challenge. I spent an average of 1.5 hours daily (28 days) on education. Even though this month yielded no research, I feel ready to practice some new skills with my research in November.
Janine Adams says
That’s fantastic, Gwen! You’re inspiring me to challenge myself to a month of daily genealogy education. Thank you!
Mary says
I tried to do what I could do when I could but it was a tough month. Family and friends needed help due to health issues. However, I did have a few people reach out to me regarding DNA matching which is rather a nice change of pace.
I’m going to keep trying at night this month to get some time in.
Janine Adams says
Mary, (living) family and friends have to take priority, don’t they? I hope November is an easier month for you.
Nita says
I bombed out and had only a few days of research. Too many other things going on but I’m determined to get back in the groove.
Janine Adams says
You can always jump back in, Nita! Please be kind to yourself. And keep an eye out for a new challenge in the coming months. Thanks for reporting in.
