September 2024 30 x 30 challenge mid-month check in

September 15, 2024 By Janine Adams 8 Comments

We’re halfway through September. If you’re participating in this month’s 30 x 30 challenge, in which we’ve committed to doing 30 minutes of genealogy-related activity for 30 days in a row (or whatever variation of that you’d like), it’s time to check in. How is it going? Let us know in the comments.

I’ll start. I had committed to working through my paper genealogy files, making sure that I have scanned everything in them so I can let them go. I’ve moved to an apartment and I have a fraction of the file space I had when I lived in our big home. How’s it going? Not great, but horrible either. I worked on the project probably six of the 15 days. And I’m making slow progress. One thing I know is that if I hadn’t taken on the 30 x 30 challenge, I wouldn’t have done anything!

Please comment and let us know how it’s going and whether the challenge has been helpful!

I have not yet started the challenge…..what note-taking app do you recommend for digitizing my general genealogy items into?
At one time I used Evernote, but would like to switch to another app…..
    Thank-you…..Faye

    Faye,

I used Evernote for many years but when jacked up their decided to transfer to the Notes app on my Mac and iPhone.

I wrote a blog post for OYFH about how I’m moving the notes. Here’s the link: https://organizeyourfamilyhistory.com/switching-from-evernote-to-apple-notes/

I’m on the last year of my Evernote subscription and I’ve been slowly going through my notes and transferring them. Any new notes I create are in Notes.

I hope that’s helpful! I appreciate the reminder to get back to that note transferring project.

I am working on my 1790 to 1810 census. It’s been a hit and miss on finding my ancestors. Especially my female ancestors. I have missed three days, but hope to make it up. My next year project is to digitize my paperwork.

I’ve been busy every day, working on genealogy – in spite of everyone in the house coming down with Covid a week ago. Mild cases for all of us, so I’m still on track.

So sorry to hear you and your family have Covid, Linda! I’m glad it’s mild and I’m very impressed that you’ve kept going on the daily genealogy!

I have just stumbled on to your site. I have been periodically working on my ancestry for years. I was taken aback when you said “Letting Go” of your hard copies. What exactly does that entail? Notes? What do you do with originals, like birth, baptism, marriage or death certificates? Pictures too. Can’t wait to delve into your website for more information! Thank you

Glad you found the site, Nicole! I went digital with my genealogy research some years back. My research is mostly done online, so I download, rather than print, what I find. But when I started out, I was printing everything. So I’m going through the paper files from back in the day and making sure that I have digital copies of everything. Then I’m recycling the paper. I’m hanging on to what few original documents I have (primarily vital documents I sent away for). I have not tackled photos yet. I don’t have a lot of handwritten notes, but I’ve scanned those that seem valuable. I hope that’s helpful!

about me

I'm Janine Adams, a professional organizer and a genealogy enthusiast. I love doing family history research, but I find it's very easy for me to get overwhelmed and not know where to turn next. So I'm working hard to stay organized and feel in control as I grow my family tree.

In this blog, I share my discoveries and explorations, along with my organizing challenges (and solutions). I hope by sharing what I learn along the way I'll be able to help you stay focused and have fun while you do your research, too.
