Time for a 30 x 30 check in!

June 15, 2021 By Janine Adams 18 Comments

It’s the middle of the month…how’s your June 30 x 30 going? I have to admit that I have not been as successful as I’d like (or as I was in April). I was doing pretty well until my husband was hospitalized for a heart ailment and that took priority over everything. So I didn’t research June 5 to 9. He’s home now and doing very well and I’ve gotten back into the swing of daily research. I just love how easy it is for me to research when it’s all so fresh in my memory. And I’m grateful for the challenge because I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have jumped back in without it.

How about you? If you’re participating in the challenge, how is it going? Have you found daily research to be helpful? And has the challenge helped you stick with it? Please share in the comments!

For the first 13 days I did great. I was able to provide ancestor data (legacy program) to my cousin and I was able to download from Ancestry a 1951 High School picture. I am on vacation this week, so it will be a little iffy on what I can do. I plan to listen to some of the talks from the 2021 SCGS Jamboree.

That’s great, Jerry! And listening to talks while you’re on vacation certainly counts in my book!

        Janine,
I didn’t really read your post. I just replied. Sorry your husband was ill. Glad he is doing better.

So Sorry you husband was/is ill. I have been trashing old posts from my Facebook page. Nobody wants to look at things with expired links from 2015.

Marie, that’s great. It literally never occurred to me to go through old FB posts and throw away irrelevant ones. Thanks for your kind words about my husband. He’s doing well!

So glad to hear your husband is on the mend. Like you, I was not as focused in June as I was in April, I blame the country opening up, and being able to see my kids for the first time in months. The nice weather is also distracting me. But if I miss a day, there are days I am researching for longer than 30, so in the end it will pretty much even out. I also should probably be working on a branch, where I know there is info, rather than focusing on a brick wall. But it’s all part of the learning process!

So sorry your hubby has been ill and so glad he’s home and “on the mend.” You’re right — family is No. 1 priority!!
I’ve managed to “do genealogy” at least 30 minutes each day even with traveling 2 weekends for grandchildren’sp’ weddings. It’s worked to my advantage to listen to a backlog of podcasts. I plan to work on Newspapers.com articles for my paternal line for the remainder of the month.

Sorry to hear about your husband but happy that he is doing better. This is my first time participating in this challenge and that has motivated me to spend time every day so far working on some aspect of my genealogy. I have actually spent quite a bit more time than 30 minutes each day but I am retired and have the time – I have boxes of genealogy information from back in the 1970’s when I began my research so I took one family “box” of paperwork, sorted it by family names and I am computerizing one family at a time.

Well, after completing the research for the two family presentations (both went well!) I haven’t been as faithful in my 30 minutes each day this month. I’ve also had several events I’ve gone to. These have kept me occupied, too. Several of these events were genealogy related…..so does that count?! Ha! I’ll get back on track, now that I’ve been reminded. ☺️ Zenda

Of course that counts! You make the rules. Glad you’re planning to get back on track. Congratulations on your two presentations going well, Zenda!

Considering I am moving house this week I haven’t done too badly. I have missed a couple of days due to packing, and work commitments, but after my move tomorrow hope to be back on track with the 30 minutes a day. I have been looking at a branch of my family that has been very neglected, and hardly anything is known about them. It is interesting, and so far one illegitimate child and one second marriage we knew nothing about has been discovered. Now to sort out which of the two men with the same name from the same area, with a wife of the same name belongs to my family (children’s names seem to be the key to this one).

I’m impressed you did any research in the midst of a move! I hope everything goes well. Good luck with your research. It sounds interesting!

Glad to hear your husband is on the mend.
I started the month with all good intentions, then went away for several days and I’m trying to get back into it. I’m working on a “quick & dirty” tree for a Nova Scotia branch of my family to ultimately identify a third great-grandfather (DNA project).

Thanks for reporting in, Elizabeth! One thing I love about this challenge is that it prompts me to jump back in even if I get away from it. I hope it has the same effect on you!

Hi, Janine. I am doing very well with my June 31 x 31 commitment. One of the things I have felt was important was to give back to the genealogy community. A few years ago I heard about FamilySearch Web Indexing Project and transcribed some documents. But like most folks I wandered off in other directions of my own genealogy. So this month I committed to do 31 days of FamilySearch Web Indexing, I started with 30 minutes in mind, and I am now at 1.5 hours per day. That’s a lot of indexing. Hopefully through my transcribing, others will find a family member they have been searching for. Linda Freeto, Waco, Texas

Wow, Linda! 1.5 hours a day is definitely a lot of indexing! I’ve done some indexing (you’re inspiring me to do more) and I know that indexing and transcribing require a lot of concentration. Good for you for giving back!!

I’m glad to hear that your husband is doing better. Like you, I haven’t made much progress this month. I’ve only done the equivalent of five days of research this month so far. I’m hoping to get more in but … we’ll see.
