March 30 x 30 wrap up

March 31, 2023 By Janine Adams 14 Comments

It’s the last day of the month (and the quarter!) and this month’s 30 x 30 challenge ends today. Time to check in and let us know how it went.

For me, it wasn’t the greatest month for genealogy research. I did attend the Spring Seminar sponsored by the Midwest Genealogy Center. Gena Philibert-Ortega gave four terrific talks. So I got to log essentially seven hours of learning, which helped my average a lot. Otherwise, I researched a handful of days.

But I’m glad I did the challenge, because it meant that genealogy research didn’t fall off my radar. I’m working on a New Thing that isn’t genealogy related. But I promise to tell you about it soon, because it might interest you. I’ve been prioritizing that over genealogy research at the moment.

How about you? If you participated in the challenge, how did it go? Even if you didn’t meet the goal of 30 minutes of research for 30 days this month, was participating in the challenge helpful? Please let us know in the comments!

March 30 x 30 challenge mid-month check-in

March 16, 2023 By Janine Adams 20 Comments

We’re halfway through March and it’s time to report in. If you’re participating in the 30 x 30 challenge, how’s it going?

I have to admit I’ve had trouble carving out time for genealogy research (or even genealogy writing) this month, though I’m fairly confident that if I didn’t have a challenge going I wouldn’t be doing anything. As I posted last week, I’ve enjoyed turning my attention to my husband’s family in the time I’m able to research. And I’m proud of myself for keeping up my informal research log each session. With any luck, I’ll do more research in the latter half of the month. I’ll be attending the Mid-Continent Public Library’s Spring Seminar next weekend in Independence, Missouri, so that will give me some quality time with my research.

How about you? Please let us know in the comments how it’s going!

The rejuvenating effect of switching my research focus

March 14, 2023 By Janine Adams 14 Comments

I’ve been researching my family pretty seriously for more than a dozen years. My progress has been slow and careful and the excitement of beginning that research is a dim memory. If I’m being honest, I’ve been less motivated about my genealogy research over the last year or so; that’s because of other pressures in my life but also because the research may have become a little stale.

This month I decided to research my husband’s family, for the first time. It started over an idle question about what year they were married, since I’m privileged to wear my mother-in-law’s engagement ring.Ā  I did a quick search and came up with two wedding dates. It turns out both dates were right–they were married secretly out of state at the age 17 (they lied and said they were 21!) and then again a year later in an official ceremony, something that is part of family lore. Just finding those dates was a thrill and it was so fun to share what I’d learned with my husband, Barry.

So I’m off to the races with a new family. I’m sure I’ll get back to my familiar ancestors before too long, but in the interim it’s fun to relive the thrill of discovery with something new. If you’re getting bored with your research, you might try picking a new branch of your family or researching the family of a spouses or friend!

New 30 x 30 challenge

February 28, 2023 By Janine Adams 32 Comments

Tomorrow is the first of the month and I’m ready to start another 30 x 30 challenge. I was a little hesitant because I failed so miserably in my January 30 x 30 challenge. But I realized that’s not a good reason not to try again.

I want to be kind to myself and not put too much pressure on my time in March, so I’ve tinkered with what I’m committing to this time. I’d like to average 30 minutes a day over the next 30 days (starting tomorrow), doing genealogy research, genealogy organizing, genealogy learning (i.e. RootsTech sessions, webinars, and the Mid-Continent Public Library Spring Seminar, which I’m planning to attend) and genealogy writing. I’m working on a new Orderly Roots Guide and I have been having trouble prioritizing it. So I’ll allow that work time to count toward my 30 x 30. That’s what feels good to me this month.

How about you? Would you like to join me in doing 30 minutes of genealogy-related activities for 30 days in a row in March? If so, how will you modify the challenge to fit your needs? Please let me know in the comments if you’re in. I’ll be posting a mid-month check-in as well as a wrap up post.

Here’s to a great month!

about me

I'm Janine Adams, a professional organizer and a genealogy enthusiast. I love doing family history research, but I find it's very easy for me to get overwhelmed and not know where to turn next. So I'm working hard to stay organized and feel in control as I grow my family tree.

In this blog, I share my discoveries and explorations, along with my organizing challenges (and solutions). I hope by sharing what I learn along the way I'll be able to help you stay focused and have fun while you do your research, too.
