Quick tip #30: Don’t forget to have fun!

December 24, 2021 By Janine Adams 6 Comments

Here’s the next in my occasional series of bite-size Quick Tips. Click on the Quick Tips tag for my other Quick Tips. Because I tend to write longer posts, I wanted to provide a quick-to-read (and quick-to-write) post every couple of weeks on a small topic that pops into my head. This is one I need to remind myself about when the going gets tough.

Don’t forget to have fun

Those of us who aren’t professional genealogists are more than likely pursuing this passion for the fun of it. But sometimes it doesn’t feel like fun does it? Butting up against a brick wall can make your head hurt!

When I start to get frustrated with my research, I remind myself that I’m doing this because I enjoy it. And then I step away from the frustrating problem and do some genealogy activity that I find particularly fun. Your idea of fun will certainly be different, but you might give this a try. You might even keep a list of fun tasks that you can turn to when you to reignite your love for genealogy.

Remember, this is supposed to be fun!

Yes, our research should be fun! My cousin used to say when a relative became too difficult and uncooperative (ie: brick wall), she would simply put them in the bottom draw until she could deal with them again. Lol! Enjoy your holidays!

Thank you for this reminder. Sometimes I am so overwhelmed with all the things being shown to us that I become lost in all the “bling” out there. I have decided to go back to the simpler way of keeping organized and enjoying what I am doing again.

I needed this reminder! I put time constraints and expectations on myself in the name of setting a goal. But it’s more like a jail sentence at times because I box myself into an unrealistic situation. I think I need to set my goal as having fun “while” doing the genealogical work

Oh my gosh, it makes me sad to think of a goal turning into a jail sentence! I think it’s great to set a goal of having fun with your genealogy!

about me

I'm Janine Adams, a professional organizer and a genealogy enthusiast. I love doing family history research, but I find it's very easy for me to get overwhelmed and not know where to turn next. So I'm working hard to stay organized and feel in control as I grow my family tree.

In this blog, I share my discoveries and explorations, along with my organizing challenges (and solutions). I hope by sharing what I learn along the way I'll be able to help you stay focused and have fun while you do your research, too.
