I know it’s only been a month since my last 30 x 30 challenge ended, but in 2020 a month feels like at least three months, so it feels time for another. Will you join me in committing to doing 30 minutes of genealogy research (or organizing genealogy research or whatever you want) every day for 30 days stating October 1?
I was on my big trip to Walla Walla from September 6 to 19 and spent the weeks on either side of the trip preparing or digging out so I did virtually no genealogy research in September. I’m anxious to elevate genealogy to the top of my priority list, which is what these challenges do for me.
Who’s in? If you’re up for it, let me know in the comments. Here’s to a great October challenge!
Christy Underwood says
I am in!
Janine Adams says
Excellent!
Cheri Weakley says
You Bet.
It’s Family History Month. It’s time to revisit the creative nonfiction story about my grandmother. I discovered I was led astray during the August 30×30 so I set it aside with the promise to reboot in Oct.
Janine Adams says
Terrific. I hope it’s a great month for you, Cheri. Thanks for the reminder that October is Family History Month!
Judi Kleine says
I am in. I need the nudge to work on it.
Janine Adams says
Great, Judi. I know that the 30 x 30 always gives me a big nudge!
Zenda says
I’m in! Now, let’s see, which project……?
Janine Adams says
Sometimes deciding that is the hardest part! Glad you’re joining the challenge.
Gwen Jackson says
Thanks, Janine.
I’m in for October and plan to continue my Research Like a Pro eCourse as well as working on my Legacy Family Tree re-do.
BTW I’ve created an excel file to track my 30 x 30 time. It’s amazing how seeing daily entries with task and time spent keeps me “on track”.
Gwen Jackson
Janine Adams says
Terrific, Gwen! I love my Numbers spreadsheet to track my 30 x 30 time spent. You’re right–it’s very valuable! I especially love that though I enter minutes, it gives a total in hours and minutes whenever I sum it up. For some reason, that makes me smile every time.
Cheri Weakley says
Hi Gwen,
Diana Elder & Nicole Dyer’s Research Like a Pro is a terrific course. I took it last year
Cheri Weakley says
Janine,
On your re-do, are you starting with a fresh tree or are you using your existing tree to review/correct/add?
Janine Adams says
Cheri, I’m not doing a redo. But when I did back in 2012, I started with a fresh tree, in fresh software.
Cheri Weakley says
Thanks Jenine
Gwen Jackson says
Cheri
I’m doing the re-do and starting with a fresh tree. It seemed easier than sifting through the old one. This time I’m not adding ancestors until I have sources to verify my information.
Cheri Weakley says
Thanks Gwen,
I’m excited for you and can’t wait for mid moth check-in to learn about your progress and thoughts on your do-over.
Janine Adams says
Gwen, that’s exactly what I did and it is so nice to have tree you feel utterly confident about!
lindahurtubise says
I’m in as soon as my computer is set back up.
Janine Adams says
Great, Linda!
Martha Mooney says
I haven’t stopped since the last challenge. While I don’t get it done every day, I have digitlaized over 2000 pictures in the month of September, I have many boxes to go and several boxes of slides.
Next I will start telling the stories that I know.
So yes I will do the challegnge again.
Janine Adams says
That’s awesome and inspiring, Martha!
karen says
I’m in. I did nothing in September
Janine Adams says
I hope and trust that October will be better for both of us!
lindafreeto says
Janine, I am in!! I have never done one of your challenges before. But I follow your blog regularly and have read the success others have had. Now I need to get off the sofa and focus on my Family Tree. Thanks for the offer, Janine.
Janine Adams says
That’s fantastic! So glad to have you joining!
Elizabeth Handler says
I did this in August and it was great. I’ve done very little in September so I need this inspiration. I hope to finish my re-organizing project that I worked on in August. Like Gwen, I’ve also set up a 30×30 spreadsheet to help me keep track.
Thanks for the nudge!!
Janine Adams says
Great, Elizabeth! I hope it’s a great month.
Missy says
I am in! I am currently researching the family of my Great Great Grandmother, who left England for New Zealand in 1841, she was an early settler in Nelson arriving on the second ship to go to Nelson. I have found some information, but doing it every day will (I hope) keep me focussed and not going off on tangents.
Janine Adams says
Good luck with that great project, Missy! I hope the 30 x 30 challenge is helpful!
Pat Lancaster says
I would like to do this, will you send me an email each day or how does this work? Thank you for the invite.
Janine Adams says
That’s great that you want to do it, Pat! It’s simpler than that: You’re on your own to do the daily work and then mid-October I’ll write a post with an update on how I’m doing and ask you all to comment on whether you’re able to keep up the daily work. Sometimes the hardest part is remember. A post-it note on your computer (or somewhere else prominent) might be the answer!
Cheri Weakley says
30×30 is an appointment with myself. I add it to my digital calendar with reminders. I schedule an hour and set my timer for 30 minutes. When the timer rings, I assess my status and either choose to add another 15-20 minutes or wrap up with notes on where to begin to save time tomorrow.
Melissa S Foremny says
That is a GREAT idea! I may just try that myself!
Janine Adams says
I 100 percent use a timer. I’m always surprised how fast 30 minutes goes when I’m doing genealogy research!
Lisa B says
I’m in! I’ve never done this challenge before. I so need to get my research organized …
Janine Adams says
Excellent! Daily effort can be really helpful in getting your research organized!
Sherry Warren says
I am in! And I’m new to this challenge so I have the rest of today to decide what I will be doing—organizing or researching! Hmmm, which one will it be…..
Janine Adams says
It can be both, Sherry! The important thing is that you’re doing something each day. Welcome to the challenge!
Cathy Whitfield says
Well I’m definitely in! I am organizing my mother’s genealogy room. She has been researching for 20+ years and the last 15 she has had difficulties with her memory…. Plus add that she is a hoarder. The room had a small pathway to the computer chair. I have been working on it for the past month but it is slow go because I have to look at every piece of paper.
I will be at her house mon-fri, and then will be doing my own research on weekends.
Janine Adams says
Cathy, what a nice thing you’re doing for your mother. I hope you make some great discoveries and that you take care of yourself in the process. I know from experience that decluttering and organizing in a very crowded space is hard work. Welcome to the challenge!
Melissa S Foremny says
I am IN! My daughter’s wedding last weekend is over and I’m FINALLY able to go back to my genealogy cave/happy place! I need to really get the office organized so I figure 15 minutes on that elephant and 30 minutes of my fun (research) is a great way to go! Thank you!
Janine Adams says
Congratulations on getting through your daughters wedding! I love your idea of combining organizing and research. If you prefer the research, then it will be a great reward for the organizing!
Mary says
Yes! I’m also doing this. I couldn’t do much in August and September was a blur with back to school. I am ever so hopeful with October. I started last night by organizing my genealogy book marks. That was a mess!
