Quick Tip #41: Read everything with a critical eye

April 13, 2023 By Janine Adams 4 Comments

Here’s the next in my occasional series of bite-size Quick Tips. Click on the Quick Tips tag for my other Quick Tips. Because I tend to write longer posts, I wanted to provide a quick-to-read (and quick-to-write) post every now and then on a small topic that pops into my head. This one is an important reminder.

Read everything with a critical eye

When you’re evaluating evidence, it’s a good idea to keep in mind that what you’re reading may not be right. If it’s a fact that another researcher has provided, be sure to check for a source citation and then look at the actual source. When looking at a document, consider the informant and how likely the document is to be accurate. Information on an ancestor’s birth, for example, is more likely to be accurate if it came from a birth certificate than from a death certificate, since it’s closer in time to the event. The accuracy of a census record depends on the knowledge of the person who the gave the information to the enumerator, as well as the enumerator’s listening (and handwriting) skills, among other factors.

If you find conflicting evidence, it’s easy assume that the information you found first was correct and that the subsequent information is inaccurate. But that might not be the case. Try to be critical about all the information you come across in your research.

March 30 x 30 wrap up

March 31, 2023 By Janine Adams 14 Comments

It’s the last day of the month (and the quarter!) and this month’s 30 x 30 challenge ends today. Time to check in and let us know how it went.

For me, it wasn’t the greatest month for genealogy research. I did attend the Spring Seminar sponsored by the Midwest Genealogy Center. Gena Philibert-Ortega gave four terrific talks. So I got to log essentially seven hours of learning, which helped my average a lot. Otherwise, I researched a handful of days.

But I’m glad I did the challenge, because it meant that genealogy research didn’t fall off my radar. I’m working on a New Thing that isn’t genealogy related. But I promise to tell you about it soon, because it might interest you. I’ve been prioritizing that over genealogy research at the moment.

How about you? If you participated in the challenge, how did it go? Even if you didn’t meet the goal of 30 minutes of research for 30 days this month, was participating in the challenge helpful? Please let us know in the comments!

Help me decide…

March 23, 2023 By Janine Adams 6 Comments

I’ve been thinking that my next Orderly Roots Guide would be The Imperfect Genealogist, based on the talk of the same name I’ve given at RootsTech and various genealogy societies. I’m the co-host of the podcast Getting to Good Enough, all about letting go of perfectionism so you can do more of what you love, so it’s a topic that’s near and dear to my heart. But the other day I started having doubts about whether it’s something people would be interested in buying. So I figured I’d ask my blog readers.

I’m thinking that the guide would cover the following:

  • Why perfectionism can be a problem for genealogists
  • Areas of your research that can benefit from a “good enough” approach
  • Areas where good enough isn’t actually good enough
  • Some ideas for letting go of perfectionism

Like my three other shorter guides, this downloadable pdf would probably be about 10 to 12 pages and sell for $8.99.

Please let me know in the comments if you think that The Imperfect Genealogist is a good topic for a guide. And, please, if you have other ideas for guides you’d like to see, let me know in the comments! I appreciate any input you have.

P.S. If you’re going to the Spring Seminar at the Midwest Genealogy Conference in Independence, Missouri, on Saturday, let’s meet up!

March 30 x 30 challenge mid-month check-in

March 16, 2023 By Janine Adams 20 Comments

We’re halfway through March and it’s time to report in. If you’re participating in the 30 x 30 challenge, how’s it going?

I have to admit I’ve had trouble carving out time for genealogy research (or even genealogy writing) this month, though I’m fairly confident that if I didn’t have a challenge going I wouldn’t be doing anything. As I posted last week, I’ve enjoyed turning my attention to my husband’s family in the time I’m able to research. And I’m proud of myself for keeping up my informal research log each session. With any luck, I’ll do more research in the latter half of the month. I’ll be attending the Mid-Continent Public Library’s Spring Seminar next weekend in Independence, Missouri, so that will give me some quality time with my research.

How about you? Please let us know in the comments how it’s going!

about me

I'm Janine Adams, a professional organizer and a genealogy enthusiast. I love doing family history research, but I find it's very easy for me to get overwhelmed and not know where to turn next. So I'm working hard to stay organized and feel in control as I grow my family tree.

In this blog, I share my discoveries and explorations, along with my organizing challenges (and solutions). I hope by sharing what I learn along the way I'll be able to help you stay focused and have fun while you do your research, too.
