An impromptu 30 x 30 challenge (March 2020 edition)

March 1, 2020 By Janine Adams 32 Comments

It’s March 1 and I’m sitting at the airport in Salt Lake City, watching the snow fall and waiting to go home to St. Louis, where it should be 65 degrees. I took out a piece of paper and started mind mapping some notes and reflections. It hit me that what I really need is a 30 x 30 challenge. February was a blur for me and while I spent time thinking about genealogy because I was putting the final touches on my RootsTech presentation (which went well!), I barely did any family history research of my own. (I did manage to squeeze in a little time at the Family History Library.)

So I’m creating a 30 x 30 challenge this month, where I commit to doing 30 minutes of research every day. Or at least I’ll strive for daily research that totals 900 minutes by the end of the month.Ā  Does anyone want to join me?

I find making this commitment to be really motivating. I’m an Upholder, for those of you who are familiar with Gretchen Rubin’s Four Tendencies. The 30 x 30 challenge elevates my genealogy research to the top of my priority list. Since I am not traveling again until April 1, this seems like a great month to do it.

Please let me know in the comments if you’d like to take part of the challenge. Feel free to say what you’ll be working on (though don’t feel like you have to).

RootsTech was great, by the way. This coming week, I’ll write a post-RootsTech post.

30 x 30 challenge wrap up

January 30, 2020 By Janine Adams 15 Comments

It’s January 30, the last day of this month’s 30 x 30 challenge. I’m curious: How did it go? Did you find that the challenge being in January helped a little? I think it helped me because I wanted to start the year off right.

Were you able to meet your goal? Even if you weren’t, did the challenge help you do more than you would have done without the challenge?

I had a great first 3/4 of the month. As I mentioned in the mid-month check in, I manged to research every day the first half of the month, even if I wasn’t able to put in a full 30 minutes. But I hit a snag with a trip I took on January 22. I was gone for five days and I was able to research only two of them. And then once I got home, I had to deal with a family health crisis (my brother in Walla Walla is very ill) which necessitated a last-minute trip there, so genealogy is completely off my radar.

But I feel very good about the work I was able to do and once life returns to normal I hope to hop back in. I’ll be going to Salt Lake City at the end of February for RootsTech and I hope to spend some time at the Family History Library, so that will be a big boost!

Please let me know in the comments how your challenge went!

It’s (finally) time for another 30 x 30 challenge!

December 27, 2019 By Janine Adams 48 Comments

Happy to new year to all my readers! Boy, do I need a 30 x 30 challenge. I have been so disconnected from my research since my last 30 x 30 challenge in October, first because of National Novel Writing Month and then I was slammed with work for my organizing business in December. So my research has been quite dormant, which makes me sad.

Starting January 1 I commit to doing 30 minutes of genealogy research every day for 30 days. Will you join me?

The first step for me–which I hope to do before January 1 rolls around–will be getting back in touch with what I was doing with my research. I’ll do that by reviewing my informal research log. I hope to take some time this weekend to set some goals for my genealogy research in 2020 as well. I think that I’m going to try to keep them simple this year, with an emphasis on daily research. (If there’s one thing that these 30 x 30 challenges have taught me, it’s the value of daily research.)

So please let me know in the comments if you’re interested in participating in the January 2020 30 x 30 challenge. I’ll do a mid-month status report that I’ll invite you to participate in. Otherwise it’s very low key…just an opportunity to get back into daily research knowing that others are doing it with you.

Can’t wait to get into daily research!

October 30 x 30 challenge – who’s in?

September 30, 2019 By Janine Adams 41 Comments

Boy do I need a 30 x 30 challenge. I barely did any genealogy research in September–my priorities kept shifting away from genealogy. I did spend one day at the library with my genealogy buddy (more on that next week), which was great. But otherwise, my research log for September is pathetic.

So clearly I need a 30 x 30 challenge to elevate genealogy on my priority list. Who would like to join me? This month, I vow to spend 30 minutes a day working on genealogy research every day for 30 days. My focus will be finishing up (or at least making great progress on) processing the documents I obtained on my Kentucky research trip in June. And I’m committing to creating an entry in my Evernote research log each day.

If you’d like to join me, please just leave a note in the comments. If you’d like to mention what you’ll be focusing on, all the better.

I have high hopes for October!

Edited to add: Apologies if you tried to comment and were blocked (and thank you to the readers who told me about it). The firewall issue is now fixed.

about me

I'm Janine Adams, a professional organizer and a genealogy enthusiast. I love doing family history research, but I find it's very easy for me to get overwhelmed and not know where to turn next. So I'm working hard to stay organized and feel in control as I grow my family tree.

In this blog, I share my discoveries and explorations, along with my organizing challenges (and solutions). I hope by sharing what I learn along the way I'll be able to help you stay focused and have fun while you do your research, too.
