What Facebook genealogy groups do you belong to?

I think Facebook groups are a great way to gain knowledge, ask specific questions, and stay connected. I don’t belong to any genealogy-related family Facebook groups, but I know it can be a great to meet cousins.

I’d love to hear from readers of this blog what Facebook groups you recommend. I’m hoping to learn about groups that I didn’t know about–and I’m hoping this post will help OYFH readers as well.

Here are the Facebook groups I belong to, listed in the order of frequency of my reading. (However, since Facebook puts in front of me those groups that I interact with, the order is always changing and not particularly relevant.)

  • Genealogy Research Loggers (that’s the group I run, specifically about genealogy logs)

  • Genealogy Organizers (specifically for professional organizers)
  • Evernote Genealogists
  • Technology for Genealogy
  • Ancestral DNA for Dummies
  • Genealogy – Cite Your Sources
  • Geneabloggers Tribe
  • Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness
  • Washington State Genealogy Network
  • Kentucky Genealogy Network
  • St. Louis Genealogical Society

You can find any of these groups by typing their name in the Facebook search box. Some require approval.

Asking again: How do you use Facebook for genealogy?

Unfortunately, a WordPress problem caused the comment Submit button to disappear and readers couldn’t answer the question. So I thought I’d try again. Please let me know how you use Facebook for your research!

Facebook has become part of my daily life and, I bet, yours. It’s almost hard to imagine how we navigated the online world without it. I use it for lots of things, but I don’t use it a whole lot to further my genealogy research. I’d like that to change.

I know that Facebook offers a lot to genealogists and I’m wondering how you all use it. I belong to a few genealogy-related Facebook groups that I find really helpful when I take the time to read them. They are:

I’m also a part of one family group, which was helpful when a reunion was being organized last year. And, of course, I have the Organize Your Family History Facebook page.

Unfortunately, I’ve just realized that the Submit button for comments  disappeared! I apologize to anyone who wanted to comment and couldn’t. I have created a workaround, so you can post now, but am hoping to get back to my usual comments form soon. 

The Organized Genealogist Facebook group

Yesterday, thanks to an Upfront with NGS post, I learned about a relatively new Facebook group called The Organized Genealogist. It’s a place where genealogists can share information, ideas, and resources on organizing their research. And, boy, do they share! After only a couple of months of existence, there are 2358 members of this closed group. I spent some enjoyable time perusing the group’s posts today and plan to check in regularly.

Since I know you’re interested in organizing and genealogy, I urge you to check it out and request membership. It’s a closed group and membership must be approved, but it’s as simple as clicking the request button.

I think it’s a terrific resource!
