Creating a research log habit

Creating a research log habitI’ve been doing genealogy research long enough to know the value of keeping a research log. Yet I really resist it. I’m not sure why and it’s driving me a little crazy. I was thinking about it this morning as I was walking my dog and I vowed to amend my 2017 genealogy goals to add this important goal:

  • Create a habit of logging each research session

I think one of the reasons I’ve resisted using a log is that I find myself a little intimidated by complicated spreadsheets. The research log created and shared by Thomas MacEntee is a thing of beauty. Used regularly and properly it would elevate anyone’s research. Yet the idea of filling it out is just too much for me. And so I’ve been very hit or miss on writing down what I’m researching.

On my walk this morning, it hit me that a research log is like any organizing system: The very best one is the one you will use. It’s not a one-size-fits-all thing. There’s no right way to do it. The important thing is to just do something.

When I got home, I mindmapped what a simple research log I might create for myself would look like. Then I looked back at my previous attempts, all in Evernote, and I realize I actually have something in place that I can just pick up and start using again.

Back in late 2013, I partnered with the personal organizer app Springpad (RIP Springpad!) and created a Family History Organizer custom notebook. Part of it was research tracker template, a very simple form to track what you’ve done in each session. A Research Log Lite, if you will. I think I never felt my research tracker template was good enough to qualify as a research log and I didn’t fully commit to it. (I’ve blogged about my attempts.) But now I feel that if I use it regularly, I’ll actually have a nice body of knowledge. I’m going for it.

Today’s the first day of a new focus on keeping a research log. I created a 2017 Research Log notebook in Evernote, which is my preferred place to keep track of information (genealogy-wise and otherwise). I revised the original research tracker template a little and placed in my 2017 Research Log Notebook. (That’s the template, in its entirety, up in the top of this post. Click on the image to see it larger.)

I created my first note in the notebook, titling the note with today’s date and the names of the ancestors I researched. I copied the template into the note and filled it out. I tagged it with the ancestor’s surname (Adams) and created an “Adams RL tag”, so I can easily pull up all my research log notes about the Adamses.  I hope this is the beginning of a wonderful habit.

Bonus! I made the research tracker template, public, so you can add it to your own Evernote account if you want to give it a try.  Just click on the link and it should open up in Evernote for you. (I’m a novice at public Evernote notes, so if it doesn’t work for you, please let me know and I’ll figure it out.)

I’m always excited about creating new habits in the new year; I hope to be reporting here that it’s become ingrained!

Transpose shutting down December 9

I have posted here about Transpose, the app I have used to create custom forms, including some forms for my genealogy research.

When I logged in this morning to access some information, I was really disappointed to see the following banner at the top of the site:

I wasted no time exporting my data into spreadsheets or pdfs, as appropriate, so I’ll lose nothing. But I will miss this very easy way to to gather information.

I am getting so tired of hopping on the bandwagon of great apps that then fold (see Springpad). I hope and trust that Evernote is here to stay because I have loads of information stored there. I am encouraged by its popularity and the fact it has a multi-tiered paid model.

But still. This strengthens my resolve to store as much data as possible on my hard drive, rather in the cloud. (Though my resolve was shaken a little a couple of weeks ago when I had to do a clean reinstall of my operating system. It all worked out, though.)

If you starting using Transpose on my recommendation, I’m sorry. Please don’t forget to export your data before December 9!

Hats off to pre-internet genealogists

marriageindexIn my week at the Allen County Public Library, I was struck by how great it is to be a genealogy enthusiast in the era of the Internet. We can search for our ancestors with a few keystrokes and uncover documents and clues to further our research. We have unprecedented access to digital copies of actual primary documents. We can see original handwritten marriage certificates, for example, and interpret the handwriting ourselves, rather than trusting the indexer.

I looked at many indexes in written, bound form at the library. The snippet above is from a 1937 marriage index of Hopkins County, Kentucky. My 3rd great grandparents, David Adams and Mary Ray, are listed there. I was delighted to find this documentation of the date and county of their marriage.

Many of the bound indexes I consulted were typewritten. Some dedicated person had gone to a courthouse and written down all the entries in a marriage book, for example. I picture then squinting at the handwriting, taking their best guess at the names. (We often have an advantage when we’re looking for the names of our ancestors, because we know what we’re looking for.) They probably wrote them down on a sheet of paper, took them home and typed them up. Then they published them in book form or, sometimes, in the newsletter of a genealogy society or family newsletter or elsewhere.

When the genealogist researching a family found their ancestor’s name (or a facsimile of it) in one of these indexes or newsletters, they would then write the county courthouse to ask for a copy of the record and wait for it to arrive in the mail. This is how I imagine was how genealogy was often done. It was labor intensive. It was painstaking. And it was tedious.

Now, thanks to the hard work of our predecessors and, of course, to modern technology and the great work of thousands of volunteer indexers and organizations that are digitizing these documents, most of us can sit at our computers and get a whole lot of information without leaving our homes. It’s up to us to properly document it. And, if we want, to share it.

But, as I discovered at my week in the library, it can be really important to step away from the computer and do some off-the-internet research. Go to the cemeteries and find elusive gravemarkers. Go to courthouses in the counties where your ancestors lived and see if you can find the documents you haven’t been able to find online. And, yes, go to libraries and get big clues on furthering your research.

To our older relatives who were dedicated to genealogical research in the days when it was very labor-intensive, I offer my admiration and sincere thanks.

Transpose eliminating free plans

transposelogoI’ve written here about Transpose, the app that allows you to create and use custom forms. I use it for taking notes at genealogy conferences and for abstracting genealogy data from documents. I use it for lots and lots of non-genealogy information as well, including keeping inventories, getting feedback, and keeping track of my blood pressure and the books I read.

When I first met Transpose, it was in Beta mode and was free. Then they added a paid plan, but still had a limited free plan. As of August 15, it will be out of Beta mode and will no longer offer a free plan. Instead, there are three tiers of paid plans: Individual ($9.99 a month), Team ($14.99 a month) and Enterprise ($29.99 a month).  If you have a free Transpose account, your free account will become read-only, and you won’t be able to add additional Records or Solutions.

The company actually gave me a paid plan for a year, as a thank you for being an early booster. But if they hadn’t, I’m confident I would purchase an Individual plan because I use it so much.

It can be disappointing when formerly free apps start charging, but to me that’s preferable to their going belly up, as happened in 2014 with my dear, departed Springpad.

Unfortunately, Transpose announced on November 8, 2016 that it is shutting down on December 9, 2016.
