Join me for August 2021 30 x 30 challenge?

July 30, 2021 By Janine Adams 45 Comments

Oh my goodness, do I need a 30 x 30 challenge. After a dismal June challenge, my research did not pick up pace in July. So I’m declaring a 30 x 30 challenge for August 2021. During this coming month my goal is to spend 30 minutes a day for 30 days in a row doing genealogy research. If I average 30 minutes, that will be good enough. (I keep a spreadsheet that calculates my average.)

I find that daily research is so beneficial–it keeps my ancestors top of mind and makes it so much easier to dive right in. When I don’t have a challenge going, unfortunately, sometimes genealogy plummets on my priority list. So I’m thrilled to rev up again.

Would you care to join me? If so, please say so in the comments. Feel free to share what you intend to work on (genealogy research, genealogy organizing, a specific project or goal). About halfway through the month, I’ll do an update post and invite you to let everyone know how it’s going for you.

This is the boost I need!

June 30 x 30 wrap up

June 30, 2021 By Janine Adams 30 Comments

It’s the last day of June and therefore the last day of our current 30 x 30 challenge. I’m dying to know: How did it go? Were you able to research or organize for 30 minutes a day each day this month? If not, did the challenge encourage you to do more than you might otherwise have done?

I’ll be honest; I had a disappointing month. As I posted in the middle of the month, my husband was hospitalized for a couple of days on June 6 and that completely disrupted my month. He’s doing well now (much better than before he was hospitalized), but I had a difficult time climbing back on the horse. The highlight of the month was being able to research at the History and Genealogy Room of the St. Louis County Library. I was able to get through my list of documents I’d found online that were only accessible online at a FHL affiliate. I downloaded them and will be processing them for the next little while.

I’ll definitely want another 30 x 30 challenge soon…probably August. So stay tuned. In the meantime, please let us know in the comments how your challenge went!

Time for a 30 x 30 check in!

June 15, 2021 By Janine Adams 18 Comments

It’s the middle of the month…how’s your June 30 x 30 going? I have to admit that I have not been as successful as I’d like (or as I was in April). I was doing pretty well until my husband was hospitalized for a heart ailment and that took priority over everything. So I didn’t research June 5 to 9. He’s home now and doing very well and I’ve gotten back into the swing of daily research. I just love how easy it is for me to research when it’s all so fresh in my memory. And I’m grateful for the challenge because I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have jumped back in without it.

How about you? If you’re participating in the challenge, how is it going? Have you found daily research to be helpful? And has the challenge helped you stick with it? Please share in the comments!

Who wants to join me for a June 30 x 30?

May 28, 2021 By Janine Adams 56 Comments

I am so ready for a new 30 x 30 challenge in which I commit to doing 30 minutes of genealogy research for the 30 days of June. Ordinarily, I would declare a 30 x 30 challenge closer to the first of the month, but since it’s the start of Memorial Day weekend, I thought you might want to plan ahead. Let me know in the comments if you’d like to join in on the challenge!

I had a really successful 30 x 30 in April and I had a great start in May, but once I started traveling on May 11 (I went to Walla Walla, Washington, to visit my dad), I fell off the wagon and I haven’t researched since. Having a challenge going is enough for me to elevate genealogy research on my daily task list.

I find that when I research daily–even if only for a few minutes–I stay in touch with my research and researching is easier. (I wrote a post about the value of daily research a few years ago.) Because my time is limited, I tend to set a timer for 30 minutes to keep me from getting lost in the research. (I dream of the day I’m retired and can research all day if I want!)

I’m looking forward to getting back to daily research. I hope you’ll join me!

about me

I'm Janine Adams, a professional organizer and a genealogy enthusiast. I love doing family history research, but I find it's very easy for me to get overwhelmed and not know where to turn next. So I'm working hard to stay organized and feel in control as I grow my family tree.

In this blog, I share my discoveries and explorations, along with my organizing challenges (and solutions). I hope by sharing what I learn along the way I'll be able to help you stay focused and have fun while you do your research, too.
