How They Do It: David Allen Lambert

It’s been a little while since I published a How They Do It interview and I’m delighted to present this one, from David Allen Lambert, Chief Genealogist for the New England Historic Genealogical Society in Boston and co-host of the Extreme Genes podcast. David is a prominent speaker at genealogy conferences and I was thrilled that he agreed to participate when I approached him at the NGS conference last year!

How long have you been doing genealogy?

I started being interested in genealogy as a child at the age of seven during the Bicentennial in 1976.  Seeing Roots on Television also ignited this passion which I have enjoyed for over 40 years now.

What’s your favorite thing about being a genealogist?

My favorite thing in genealogy is having had the opportunity for the past 27 years to work at the New England Historic Genealogical Society in Boston and assist others with their research.  The ability to pass along a tip, or have a full day consult and break down a genealogical brick wall with a fellow genealogist is quite rewarding.

What’s your biggest challenge when it comes to organizing your genealogy?

I have been currently undertaking during COVID-19 to organize my genealogical records digitally.  Creating digital folders for each ancestor and scanning documents.  As it is for most people, the challenge is finding the time to commit to your own research.  So I would say my biggest challenge is “free time”.

What is your favorite technology tool for genealogy?

I enjoy all the tools for genetic genealogy.  However I must say that I have enjoyed Gedmatch and DNA Painter the most in the last couple years for research into DNA mysteries.

If you were starting out new as a genealogist what would you do differently?

I would concentrate on getting all the stories from your older relatives before they are gone.  By the time I was 30 my parents had both died, and also my grandparents.  Stories are so important because they bring our ancestors back to life.  A life story can be compared to like the dash on a gravestone, the names and dates are important – but the dash gives us the stories of their lifetime.

Do you keep a research log? If so, what format?

I use notebooks for each research trip to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City and the National Archives in Washington, D.C.   I look back through these notebooks and use forms to list my to do list so I do not duplicate my research efforts twice.

How do you keep track of clues or ideas for further research?

I often use a genealogical program or an online tree to add notes that I can go back and reference.  I also print off these notes and add them to a binder.

How do you go about sharing your personal research with cousins or other interested parties?

I believe in public trees online.  This is how people will find you, and you then have the ability to connect with lost family members.  I also create “homestead” groups on Facebook to share the photos and stories I have with cousins who are not on commercial genealogical websites.

What’s the most important thing you do to prepare for a research trip?

I keep a genealogical notebook that I have for research trips handy and updated.  I bring a laptop computer, a portable hard drive, and a few portable thumb drives.  I make sure my camera has plenty of space, or my cloud-based storage will allow for up to 1,000 images.

What’s your biggest piece of advice to genealogists in terms of organizing their research?

Find a system that works for you.  But also create a system that your family members will understand after you’re gone.  There are many publications on organizing your research to guide you.  I find having folders on each family surname I have has worked best for me over the past forty-plus years.

Do you have a dedicated space in your home for doing genealogy research? What’s it like?

I split my time between my downstairs office computer, and an old bedroom now converted into my genealogical archives in my home.

Do you have anything to add?

Your genealogy is the story of your ancestors, but it is also important to concentrate on your recent family members.  Have you ever written down how your parents met?  What were all the place you lived, worked or went to school?  Have you identified all the photos you have ever taken?  When you find it frustrating that you cannot identify photos, or not locate stories on your ancestors – remember someday you will be an ancestor too.  Take on the responsibility of recording your story, and that of your parents and grandparents.  We are the story tellers for the generations not yet born.  Let’s teach them about our generation, and leave them a rich genealogical heritage to be proud of starting from you and going back in time.

30 x 30 wrap up

It’s the last day of the month. Somehow, during this pandemic, one month feels like two months. So this 30 x 30 challenge feels especially long. I’m proud to say that I did actually do genealogy research every day this month except one. I can’t remember what happened the day I didn’t manage to do any–I think it was a day I worked with an organizing client. But I feel very proud to have accomplished 29 out of 30 days of research. I didn’t do 30 minutes every day, but definitely averaged at least 30 minutes a day.

The challenge put genealogy research at the top of my priority list and for that I’m grateful. I’m so grateful, in fact, that I’ll probably have another one in just a couple of months. Keep your eye out for an August 2020 30 x 30 challenge. (I’m curious to see if I keep it up in July without the challenge.)

Stacy Julian reopening her 20in20 online course (for a good cause)

I became a huge fan of Stacy Julian when I heard her speak at RootsTech. After RootsTech, I shared details of her talk Do Something with that Box! here and I referenced it in my own talk, The Imperfect Genealogist.

Stacy is all about helping people tell stories, particularly family stories. I’m on her mailing list and I received an email this week that she is her reopening her yearlong online course, 20in20. Here’s a short video about the course.

In a nutshell, participants will create 20 projects over the course of a year. It was originally intended to take place in the calendar year 2020. Enrollment closed months ago. But that changed this week. Stacy wrote in her email:

“As I have contemplated current events—especially those that have exposed racial inequality in the United States—I have made the decision to reopen 20in20 and donate ALL of the proceeds to organizations and efforts making a difference for people of color.”

I was very impressed by this and I asked her if I could share the information here. Here’s another great piece of news. The price has been cut in half–to $60–to encourage enrollment. See the 20in20 page on Stacy’s website for where and how she’s donating the proceeds and to sign up.

This strikes me as an amazing opportunity to create some wonderful projects, with the help of an amazing teacher, at a big discount and to do good at the same time. I just had to share.

My 8th blogiversary!

On June 14, 2012, I published my first post on this blog. (It was called My quest to learn more about my family history.) When I started the blog, I had no idea what would become of it and I didn’t spend much time trying to visualize what it might turn into. But I’m really proud of what it has become. In eight years, I’ve published 588 posts, had 360,000 unique visitors and 725,000 views. And I’m still going strong. Amazing.

I tend to look at these numbers about once a year (on my blogiversary). But pretty much every day I think about how much I love my readers. You all are so wonderfully interactive and I love reading your comments. Your desire to help me and other readers, along with your kind, encouraging words about my contributions, has made this blog a joy. Thank you.

Last year in my blogiversary post, I listed six ways this blog has enhanced my life. Today seems like a good day to repeat them.

How this blog has enhanced my life:

  • I’ve learned so much from my readers! I’ve been fortunate to have such engaged readers who provide lots of great advice and input in the comments. And everyone is so kind. Thank you!
  • Some readers have become in-person friends. I’ve done some meet ups at genealogy conferences, which always adds to the conference enjoyment. I’ve even been recognized at conferences by people I hadn’t prearranged to meet!
  • I research more often. I’m confident that without this blog I would not research as much. My 30 x 30 challenges, in particular, really keep focused on the research.
  • I’m a better researcher. Because I’m researching more often, attending conferences, and benefiting from the wisdom of my readers, I’m most assuredly a better researcher than I was eight years ago and probably a better one than I would be today without the blog.
  • I’ve become acquainted with some well-known genealogists, which is always a treat. Through my How They Do It series, as well as Family Tree University webinars and just attending conferences, I’ve gotten to know some folks I admire
  • I’ve even made some money! I sell my Orderly Roots Guides and The Paperless Genealogy Guide (with Brooks Duncan) and I’ve earned some money through speaking, writing and consulting. I feel so fortunate for that!

I want to thank you, my readers, for coming along on this ride and for being such a big part of it. I can’t wait to see what the future holds!
