I think Facebook groups are a great way to gain knowledge, ask specific questions, and stay connected. I don’t belong to any genealogy-related family Facebook groups, but I know it can be a great to meet cousins.
I’d love to hear from readers of this blog what Facebook groups you recommend. I’m hoping to learn about groups that I didn’t know about–and I’m hoping this post will help OYFH readers as well.
Here are the Facebook groups I belong to, listed in the order of frequency of my reading. (However, since Facebook puts in front of me those groups that I interact with, the order is always changing and not particularly relevant.)
- Genealogy Research Loggers (that’s the group I run, specifically about genealogy logs)
- The Genealogy Squad
- The Organized Genealogist
- Genealogy! Just Ask!
- Genealogy Organizers (specifically for professional organizers)
- Evernote Genealogists
- Technology for Genealogy
- Ancestral DNA for Dummies
- Genealogy – Cite Your Sources
- Geneabloggers Tribe
- Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness
- Washington State Genealogy Network
- Kentucky Genealogy Network
- St. Louis Genealogical Society
You can find any of these groups by typing their name in the Facebook search box. Some require approval.
Please let me know what groups you love and which ones I need to make sure I check out!

Barbara Schmidt says
oh, where do I start 🙂 Of course the Genealogy Research Loggers 🙂
Then German Genealogy, We Are Genealogy Bloggers, Mecklenburg-Schwerin Germany Genealogy and other German speaking Genealogy groups
Janine Adams says
It certainly makes sense that your list would be German-intensive, since you’re a German who lives in Germany, Barbara! I appreciate your being a part of Genealogy Research Loggers.

The first two on your list plus various FB genealogy software groups: RootsMagic Users; Family Historian; FamilyTree Maker Users (the US main one has a mountain of advice but is very large), Family Tree Maker UK; MacFamilyTree Users; this is for getting a grasp of all the desktop genealogy software out there as I’m embarking on a redo after using Ancestry for my tree for far too long! One I really recommend is Photo Restoration Free Service, a Facebook group who will restore or alter all sorts of things about treasured photos. They are volunteers and do an amazing job. And I had vowed never to join FB!!
Janine Adams says
Thanks for mentioning the Photo Restoration Free Service group! Good to know. Good luck with your do-over!
Sharon Agee says
I don’t recommend Facebook at all. Too many hacks, and it’s run by a kid I do not trust
Janine Adams says
Sharon, there’s certainly enough information available outside of Facebook isn’t there? I really like it for the connections it brings me but to each her own.

I tend to look for FB groups that relate to particular geographic areas I’m interested – they could be local history rather than pure genealogy. I also look for ones relating to military history – those members are so helpful….
Janine Adams says
What a great idea to look for local history, not just genealogy in geographic groups. Thanks for the suggestion!
Maureen Mulligan says
Your group, The Irish DNA Registry, various Irish county as well as local English and Australian family history and DNA groups….too numerous to mention. Also, I use the Legacy software program so I joined the Legacy Users Group which is extremely helpful. I use Evernote so thank you for the prompt to join that group also.
Janine Adams says
Thanks for commenting, Maureen!

I also follow a lot of regional groups, both genealogy and history. Historical Wayne County, Missouri is a good example. They are fairly active and have been posting a lot of old pictures lately. I also try to join Facebook groups on general tourism of an area before I go to visit. It’s always good to see the sites a bit when you go on a genealogy-focused trip. You never know what you’ll find.
I did a lot of searching for a Facebook group for genealogy blogs about specific regions without much success, so I started my own, Missouri Genealogy Blogs. Mostly it’s my blog posts, but I’m hoping more people will add their posts over time. I have enjoyed reading the ones the other people have posted, and it’s not that hard to manage a group. So, don’t hesitate to start your own group to meet your needs, and invite others to join!
Janine Adams says
I love the idea of joining general tourism Facebook groups before a research trip! Thanks for the reminder that it’s not hard to start your own Facebook group, Leslie. I’ll go check out your Missouri Genealogy Blogs. I’m in Missouri and I have a genealogy blog, though I don’t blog about Missouri too often. Thanks for commenting.

how can I find out if there is a specific facebook group for the Hust family?
Janine Adams says
I think entering Hust or maybe Hust genealogy in the search box at Facebook is a good first step!
