October 30 x 30 challenge – who’s in?

Boy do I need a 30 x 30 challenge. I barely did any genealogy research in September–my priorities kept shifting away from genealogy. I did spend one day at the library with my genealogy buddy (more on that next week), which was great. But otherwise, my research log for September is pathetic.

So clearly I need a 30 x 30 challenge to elevate genealogy on my priority list. Who would like to join me? This month, I vow to spend 30 minutes a day working on genealogy research every day for 30 days. My focus will be finishing up (or at least making great progress on) processing the documents I obtained on my Kentucky research trip in June. And I’m committing to creating an entry in my Evernote research log each day.

I have high hopes for October!

I need an August 30 x 30 challenge!

I try to space out my 30 x 30 challenges. The last one was only two months ago, but I find myself in dire need! Is there anyone out there who would like to join me?

June was a genealogy-rich month for me. I spent most of the month planning my research trip to Kentucky and then going on it. Upon my return in late June, I tried to process everything I’d learned on the trip, but real life kept getting in the way. I got some of it done, but not all of it. Then, on July 18, I drove to Indianapolis with my OYFH friend, Vickie, for the Midwestern Roots Family History and Genealogy Conference. It was great! (I encourage you to make plans to attend the next one, which will be held July 30-31, 2020.)

When Midwestern Roots was over, I took an obscenely early flight from Indianapolis to Seattle, where I started a five-day vacation. I met my husband there, along with four friends from St. Louis, and we drove four hours to Walla Walla, Washington, where I grew up. Walla Walla is now a wine destination, so we had a lovely time drinking wine and enjoying the quaint town. I returned obscenely late on Friday night and ever since I’ve been trying to get back into the swing of things.

Each day since my return I’ve had “family history research” on my task list. And each day I’ve done none. That is why I need a 30 x 30 challenge. I know that if I pledge to you that I’ll do an average of 30 minutes of research a day for 30 straight days (notice how I snuck “an average of” into that description) then genealogy research will skyrocket to the top of my task list.

Is there anyone else who needs the accountability of a 30 x 30 challenge this month? You can, of course, adapt it to your needs. If you’re in, please let me know in the comments! In the middle of the month, I’ll post a progress report for my work and you can tell us all how it’s going for you.

Impromptu 30 x 30 challenge!

Today’s June 1 and I decided I really need a 30 x 30 challenge. I’m planning to take a research trip the last week in June and as I started thinking about how I really wanted to do some great pre-planning for it, I realized I would benefit from a 30 x 30 challenge.

Will you join me in committing to 30 minutes of genealogy research a day for 30 days (or whatever incarnation of the challenge works for you)? With a challenge, I am more likely to do daily work on planning my trip and the whole month (including the research trip) will have less stress and more ease.

I’m so glad these challenges are helpful to many of those who participate, but with this post I’m making it clear that I do it for myself! I find the accountability extremely helpful. With this particular challenge I’ll be focusing on those families I plan to research in Kentucky and on planning the logistics of the trip.

April 30 x 30 challenge: check in!

We’re a little over halfway through the month and therefore more than halfway through the April 30 x 30 challenge. If you’re one of the folks who is participating, how have you been doing with the challenge of 30 minutes of genealogy research for 30 days in a row (or whatever version you’ve created)?

I have to admit, this has been a tough one for me. I knew going in that it was going to be a challenge to do daily research. In the first two weeks of the month, I was out of town nine days. And when I was home, I was busy with organizing clients. So, as I said in the post introducing the challenge, I adjusted my goal to be daily research, no matter how small, with an average of 30 minutes a day stretched out over the month.

I’m happy to say I’ve managed to research each and every day, but I’ve been flexible on what I have to do to meet that standard. Some days I’ve research more than a half hour. Others, only ten minutes. Yesterday, all I did was read an article in the new NGS Quarterly. But the fact is that each day I’ve had something to enter in my research log and that’s made me feel good.

Last weekend, I was able to get a few hours of research in on a rainy day, so I think I’ll achieve my goal of 900 minutes over the course of the month (though I haven’t been keeping close track).
